The community of Elkhorn was founded in 1865, with development beginning in 1867. This was a city in its own right until 2005, when it was annexed by the City of Omaha. Now, about 8,000 residents call Elkhorn home. Elkhorn, named after the Elkhorn River and located just a short distance from where it meets the Platte River, was shaped by the railroad. The construction of the Union Pacific Railroad west of Omaha led to the establishment of Elkhorn Station in 1866, around which the town of Elkhorn began to grow. It's home to about 24,000 residents and was annexed into Omaha in 2005. It has seen rapid growth from 2000 to today, at 100% over that time period!

Where is Elkhorn compared to Omaha?

Elkhorn is technically West Omaha even though it's its own city.  It's between Waterloo and Green Meadows/Boys Town. It's about 24 miles or 30 minutes west of downtown Omaha.

Elkhorn Education & Schools

Education has always been a priority for the residents of Elkhorn - the first public school was constructed in 1850, long before the town was even platted. Today, Elkhorn public schools are celebrated for their small classes and personalized learning approach for each student. The district includes one high school, two middle schools, and six elementary schools. New school buildings and facilities to meet an annual increase of 6% per year in enrollment are planned as part of a $96 million bond issue.
